PI & Iteration Management

PI & Iteration Management

Overview

‘Planning Interval (PI) and Iteration Management’ is an Agile Hive Administrator feature available for Jira projects configured in My Organization on the Large Solution and ART level. It allows you to configure PIs, create iterations, define IP Iterations, and delete either when needed. You can also view an overview of all Planned, Current, and Completed PIs for the respective project.

For details on the permissions needed to access and edit ‘PI and Iteration Management’ for a project, please refer to Permissions.

Structure of PIs and Iterations in Agile Hive

PI and Iteration information must be configured either at the Large Solution and ART project levels or individually for each ART project, depending on whether the project hierarchy includes a Large Solution level. This ensures synchronized PI and Iteration timelines across Large Solution Trains and ARTs, in line with Agile Hive’s hierarchical approach.

Large Solution Level is in Use

This applies to Full SAFe® & Large Solution SAFe® configuration

  • Manage general PI information for the Large Solution Jira project (PI name, PI start & end date).

  • Manage Iterations for each child ART Jira project individually. To do so, navigate to ‘PI & Iteration Management’ of the respective ART-level project.

Large Solution Level is not Used

This applies to Portfolio SAFe® & Essential SAFe® configuration

  • Manage all PI and Iteration information for each ART Jira project individually.

Creating PIs and Iterations

To create a new PI for a Large Solution Train or ART, simply go to the ‘PI & Iteration Management’ section of the respective project in Agile Hive.

At the ART level, depending on whether a Large Solution is used, you can either create a completely new PI using the 'Create PI' button at the top of the page or add Iterations to existing PIs using the 'Add Iterations' button within the PI context.

After clicking one of the buttons, an input modal dialog will appear. Enter the required information and create the PI and/or Iterations by clicking the ‘Confirm’ button.

Agile Hive will then generate a new PI along with all defined Iterations. Additionally, for each Team-level project working within the Solution Train or ART, Agile Hive will create a corresponding Jira Sprint for each Iteration and link them with one another automatically.

These Sprints will be named using the following pattern:

<PI_NAME> + " - S" + <PI_ITERATION_COUNT> + ” - ” + <PROJECT_KEY>

Note that the Sprint name can be modified later to align with the naming conventions of individual Teams and ARTs.

Deleting PIs and Iterations

Since Agile Hive as of Jun 27, 2025 does not yet support editing of PIs and Iterations once they are created, it may be necessary to delete them (especially if they are still in a planned state) and recreate them with different start and end dates.

To delete existing PIs and Iterations, go to the ‘PI & Iteration Management’ section of the respective project in Agile Hive. If a Large Solution Train is being used, PIs can only be deleted at the Solution Train level.

For the PI or Iterations you intend to delete, click on the respective Three-Dot-Menu in the top right corner of the overview table, then select ‘Delete PI’ or ‘Delete Iterations’.

A confirmation dialog will appear, where you must also choose whether to keep or delete the Jira Sprints mapped with the Iterations being deleted. Select one of the following options:

  • Keep all corresponding Jira Sprints

  • Corresponding Jira Sprints should be deleted

If you decide to delete the Jira Sprints, note that all issues already planned for these Sprints will be moved back to top of backlog of the respective Team-level project.
